AI Voice Recorder or Phone? Try This Before You Buy

Before buying a pendant, pin or another subscription, try finding one detail from yesterday's conversation. Where you get stuck tells you what to buy.

The pink Draki plush hugs a black smartphone inside a chrome wire basket with black side grips, on a pale blue studio background.

Say you're following up after dinner. Someone offered an introduction, but you can't remember to whom. Would a wearable recorder have helped? Only if you recorded the conversation, captured the name clearly and could find it again.

Before buying an AI voice recorder, give your phone a proper trial. A separate device may make recording easier to start. It won't necessarily make the detail you need easier to find.

We build Draki, an iPhone conversation app. This is a buying checklist, not a claim that we've tested every recorder. Product documentation was checked on October 1, 2026.

Give your phone three conversations

Choose three in-person conversations that everyone agrees to record. Include the setting you actually need: a table at work, for example, rather than three solo tests in a silent room.

You can start with Voice Memos. On supported iPhones, it also transcribes recordings; Apple lists iPhone 12 or later, with language and regional restrictions. You need compatible software. No new gadget is required to try this.

The next day, look for one specific detail from each conversation: a name, a recommendation or a condition attached to a promise. Then ask:

  • Did I start recording in time?
  • Can I hear the detail clearly, and did the transcript get it right?
  • Can I find it without replaying the whole conversation?

Notice which step cost you time. That's your shopping brief.

Don't buy a fix for the wrong problem

You keep missing the start. A dedicated recorder with a physical button may earn its place. Check the actual steps from pocket to recording, including how you know it's on. One more object to charge can be worthwhile if you reliably use it.

The words are hard to hear. Try a better position first. If you test another recorder, compare it in the same room, at the same distance. A quiet demo won't answer a noisy-cafe question. If the audio is clear but the text is wrong, try another transcription tool before buying a microphone.

You recorded it, but can't find it. Compare transcript search, source passages and export. Both apps and recorder bundles can offer these tools. Test the software with your question, not just the microphone with your voice.

Check what you'll pay for

An AI voice recorder without a subscription can still have a transcription limit.

Plaud's free Starter plan includes 300 minutes a month. That's five hours. Two half-hour meetings each workday would use it in five days. Check your likely usage before comparing annual plans or extra-minute packs.

Also separate offline recording from offline transcription. Plaud NotePin S saves audio offline but needs internet for its AI processing. Local storage does not, by itself, mean your conversations stay out of the cloud.

Where Draki fits

Draki lets you record on your iPhone, revisit transcripts and summaries, and manually link a conversation to someone you've saved. You start and stop recording yourself. The bracelet is still in development.

After your permission, recordings go through Draki to OpenAI over Wi-Fi for transcription; text is stored for cloud summaries and search. Recording can work offline. Transcription isn't local. See how Draki handles conversation data.

You can also connect a compatible AI assistant to retrieve authorized text and context. Ask for the relevant transcript passage before using an answer to write your follow-up.

Try the phone first. If you do buy hardware, you should be able to finish this sentence: "I need it because my phone couldn't ___."

FAQ

Can I use my iPhone instead of an AI voice recorder?
Yes, for recording in-person conversations. Voice Memos also provides transcription on iPhone 12 or later with supported software, languages and regions. Try it in the room where you need it. This is not a guide to recording phone calls.
Does Plaud require a paid subscription?
No. As checked on October 1, 2026, Plaud includes a free Starter plan with 300 transcription minutes per month. That is five hours. More transcription requires waiting for the monthly reset, buying extra minutes or choosing a paid plan. The hardware is a separate purchase.
Can an AI voice recorder work without internet?
Recording and AI processing are separate. Plaud NotePin S, for example, saves audio offline but needs internet for transcription and summaries. Draki can also record offline, but its current public app uses OpenAI cloud transcription after permission, over Wi-Fi.
Can I use recorded conversations with ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, if your recorder lets you copy or export a transcript, you can share that text with an assistant. Draki also offers an optional custom MCP connection for authorized read access to synced text and context. Assistant, account and workspace support vary; this is not a raw-audio connection.
Does Draki record all day automatically?
No. In the current iPhone app, you choose when to start and stop recording. It cannot recover moments you did not capture. You do not need a bracelet; that hardware is still in development.
